At the Libraries: Librarian-Themed Birthday Parties

Each week Miss Kathleen provides links to a variety of stories about libraries, authors, and books. If there’s something fun going on in your local library, leave us a comment!

Hey guys, I’m back! I missed you, and hope you’ve been having a great summer, and, of course, visiting your local library for some juicy summer reads. Anyone reading anything good these days?

Cutest party idea ever! If you have a bookish little boy or girl, consider a librarian-themed birthday party. One mom did an amazing job — read all about it. (Thanks to Fuse #8 for the link!)

Here is a great way to recycle old books; specifically, for those yellowed paperbacks: make a room divider!
Next up in interior decorating, never run out of shelf space again in this house made out of bookshelves! Someday…
A house made out of bookshelves is one thing, but how about a whole library? Yes, it’s amazing, and it exists! This Japanese library is lined with bookshelves, inside and out!
Product of the week: Do you have an e-reader, but miss the smell of physical books? Well, you just might need Smell of Books, an “aerosol e-book enhancer”!
Are bookless libraries a “thing”? Should they be? I can see how they work for an engineering library, but a public library? I don’t know about that… What do you guys say? We might need a lot of the Smell of Books spray to make it work.
Turns out Bernie Madoff has been doing a lot of it in his now-copious free time. He’s chosen the ouevre of James Michener, but The New York Times asks, what should he be reading?
Maybe you’re into more classic literature than Mr Madoff? And do you also enjoy drinking? Then here is the photo spread for you: Alcohol based on classic books!
Here’s a round-up of some recent articles about our wonderful profession, tattoos and all. Thanks to the ever-cranky, ever-entertaining Annoyed Librarian for putting it together.
I know there are lots of librarians who read this column, so here’s your chance to weigh in: are you a Library SCIENTIST or a Library ARTIST? The degree is in Library Science, but I’d say there’s an art to what we do. And, as my political science professor used to say, if you have to add the word “science” to the end of a field, then it probably isn’t one. Join the discussion.

For those of you in redecorating mode, here are some great bookshelves to splurge on — so cool!
Last but not least, our Blog of the Month for July! Have you ever wished that book titles were a bit more descriptive? Then have we got the blog for you! Dan Wilbur at Better Book Titles does all the summarizing on this hilarious blog. Enjoy, and maybe find some more good stuff to read!
